Domestic Abuse and Why You Shouldn’t Suffer

You may have come across a story in the Independent newspaper last week, in which a man from Scotland had recently been jailed for subjecting his wife to horrific physical, mental and domestic abuse, as well as coercive and humiliating treatment. Shockingly, this had been going on for almost thirty years.

This poor woman had suffered in silence for such a long period of time, it had probably become ‘the norm’ for her, and it is likely she had long accepted this as a way of life.

Thankfully though, in 2015 she finally found the strength and courage to speak out, after she had contacted a local Women’s Aid branch.

So, what is the definition of domestic abuse exactly?

The GOV.UK website has shown this to be any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to:

  • Psychological
  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Financial
  • Emotional

domestic abuseFigures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) show that there were an estimated 2.0 million adults aged 16 to 59 who said they were a victim of this kind of domestic abuse in the last year.

Over the same period, the police had recorded a massive 1.03 million domestic abuse-related incidents.

Following investigations, the police concluded that 1 in every 10 crimes reported to them is a domestic abuse-related incident.

It is likely that these figures would be much higher, but sadly there are people who suffer abuse in silence.

Maybe out of fear of not being believed, or maybe because they feel embarrassed or even ashamed.

They may have been manipulated so much by their abusers, that they have been made to believe that it is their fault, and they have brought this abuse and suffering on themselves.

Domestic abuse of any kind, to anybody is not acceptable.

Nobody should be made to believe that they deserve to be treated in this way and that they have brought it all on themselves. This needs to stop.

There is a Government scheme called the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), which offers compensation to victims of domestic abuse.

Oakwood Solicitors specialise in CICA claims and would also like to try and help anybody who has or is experiencing this cruel and horrific behaviour.

A claim like this can be pursued by us on your behalf through the CICA, and our experienced and compassionate members of staff will help guide you through the process, offering support, time and dedication to recovering the maximum compensation possible.
