Health and Safety in the Workplace – Harrison Ford Leg Break
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…(or at Pinewood Studios to be precise)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Harrison Ford, who plays Han Solo in the film, was involved in a workplace incident in which he broke multiple bones in his leg. The cause of the injury was from human error in which a member of staff had pushed the wrong button and had closed a hydraulic door onto Mr Ford.
A health and safety executive compared the weight of the door to that of a small car. The incident which took place at Pinewood Studios, London, resulted in Mr Ford having to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Foodles Production Limited, the Disney owned Production Company who were responsible for all workings on the UK set of the film, have admitted to two health and safety breaches.
They currently face an unlimited fine which will ultimately be decided by the court as it was an incident that could have been avoided and was an incident that could have resulted in death.
The two breaches come from the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the first count under section 2 involving a breach of duty in relation to employees and the second count under section 3 involving a breach of duty over people not employed by Foodles Production Limited.
A representative of the government’s health and safety executive stated that <em>“The British film industry has a world-renowned reputation for making exceptional films. Managing on-set risks in a sensible and proportionate way for all actors and staff – regardless of their celebrity status – is vital to protecting both on-screen and off-screen talent, as well as protecting the reputation of the industry.”</em>
