    What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a chronic and terminal lung condition which mostly affects men, and leaves the lungs scarred which then causes severe breathing issues.

This is due to scar tissue building up in the lungs, therefore reducing their capability to transfer inhaled oxygen into the blood.

    Pulmonary Fibrosis FAQ

What are the causes of PF?

With many types of Pulmonary Fibrosis, a specific cause cannot always be determined. However, being exposed to certain conditions can increase the risk of development. These would include:

    • Exposure to certain types of dust
    • Exposure to allergens in the atmosphere (i.e. mould or bird feathers)
    • Viral/bacterial infection
    • Side effects from a drug and/or medical treatment

Which jobs/occupations leave people most susceptible to PF?

Although it is not always known why some people develop PF, there are still some roles today which increase the risk of developing the condition. These include:

    • Coal mining
    • Construction
    • Farming
    • Gardening
    • Manufacturing
    • Shipbuilding
    • Veterinarians

What can I do if I have been diagnosed with PF?

It would be best advised to join a Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group in your local area. These vital hubs provide emotional support, information about additional benefit claims and the signposting of advice for those living with and affected by this life-changing condition.

These can be accessed and directly contacted online, or by calling the Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis information line on 01733 839642.

Can I raise a civil claim for financial compensation against my current/former employer?

Absolutely. If at any time you have been negligently exposed to harmful dust or chemicals by your employer, it is possible to make a claim for financial compensation for pain and suffering, along with all of your medical fees and rehabilitation costs.

Fortunately, some solicitors will run these claims upon a ‘no-win, no-fee’ basis, meaning that the financial risk is with the law firm and not yourself or your family.

Our Head of Industrial Disease, Natasha Hardy says:

“For those suffering from a terminal illness such as PF, we believe it is important to consider how this might affect their life in the future. This includes ensuring that they recover compensation to cover any lost earnings, equipment costs and costs associated with modifying their home.

“At Oakwood Solicitors, we pride ourselves in delivering expert, client focused advice to help you navigate your way through making a claim.”
