Leeds United now in Employment Tribunal

Following my article last week regarding the ongoing woes at Leeds United, the club is now being accused in the Employment Tribunal of unfair dismissal and sexual discrimination.

Former Education and Welfare Officer, Lucy Ward, was fired from her position at the Club in July 2015 after 17 years. She claims this was because she was in a relationship with Neil Redfearn, who had three stints as caretaker manager of the Club. After the appointment of Uwe Rosler in May 2015 as the Club’s new manager, Redfearn returned to the position of academy director at the Club, until he resigned on the 16 July 2015.

The Tribunal heard that Ms Ward felt that she was “treated like a piece of meat”. She claims to be have been told by Gary Cooper, Chairman of Leeds Ladies FC, that Mr Cellino (owner of Leeds United) had said to him “Football is no place for women, they should be in the bedroom or the beauticians”.

The Club denies any wrongdoing and has cited that the reason for Ms Ward’s dismissal was that she had exceeded her annual leave allowance. Ms Ward had travelled to Canada to work for the BBC as an analyst for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
