For many people Christmas is a time of fun, parties and general happiness as they have time off from work to spend with loved ones and family.

However, that’s not the case for everyone and for some people this time of year is filled with dread and anxiety.

Alternatively, some people go into the festive period full of high hopes and expectations only to be disappointed. This can understandably develop over a short period of time into resentment and possibly anger.

Christmas can be a trying time for an already struggling relationship, although even well adjusted couples can suffer some relationship difficulties at this time of year.

Why? you may ask.

Well a lot of it has to do with unrealistic expectations people have of their relationship and of a loved one and sometimes the festivities generally. Other reasons can be due to being confirmed to the home for most of the time, which we are simply not accustomed to, free flowing alcohol causing people to speak more freely than they otherwise would and people taking offense more readily than they normally would not to mention the behaviour and comments of other family members and in-laws.

  1. Don’t overindulge in alcohol;
  2. Be realistic about your relationship and partner, no relationship is perfect and no partner is perfect;
  3. Avoid social media. People don’t necessarily post the truth and someone’s exaggeration may make you feel more disappointed than you may already feel;
  4. Make sure the temperature in the house is just right. Not too cold so people are clingy and come across as needy and not too hot so people are keeping their distance and becoming fraught.
  5. Most arguments result from a lack of communication and pent up frustration
  6. Don’t over commit with activities and events take some quiet time out… and most of enjoy yourself.
