Lariam (Mefloquine) Compensation Claims

Lariam, otherwise known as Mefloquine, has been prescribed, or better described as ‘issued’, on parade grounds and in advance of deployment by medical offices, to serving soldiers and other service personnel deployed overseas for many years. The tablet, taken once weekly, have been given commonly to soldiers being deployed overseas in an aid to prevent the contraction of malaria, despite it having an extensive list of side effects, many of those being listed as common are psychological.

These side effects include but are not limited to:

  • Abnormal dreams
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Visual Impairment
  • Vomiting
  • Psychosis
  • Seizures

Whilst side effects such as headache, nausea and vomiting might be common in pharmaceuticals side effects such as abnormal dreams, insomnia, anxiety, depression, psychosis and seizures are a real cause for concern. The majority of the above listed side effects have been noted as either very common (more than 1 in 10) or common (more than 1 in 100).

Many soldiers and military personnel were provided with Lariam despite clear warnings provided by the manufacturer as to its known side effect and safer alternatives being available. Furthermore the provision of Lariam has been noted as questionable to all service personal without clear risk assessment of each individual’s medical history which should have included a face to face assessment before being provided with the drug.

If you feel that you have been prescribed with Lariam without being given any sort of medical check, consideration of previous mental health conditions or warning of the potential side effects and have gone on to suffer with psychiatric episodes or conditions then you may be able to claim compensation.

At Oakwood Solicitors we understand that suffering with a mental health condition can be dilapidating at the best of times and that’s why we deal with all cases with upmost confidentially and understanding.

If you feel that you may have been prescribed with Lariam and suffered side effects as a result, during your military service, and wish to enquire about a potential claim please contact us today on
