The above two are obvious, if you are making public announcements that you hate your boss/job, you are bringing your company into disrepute and likely to be disciplined or even dismissed.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]

Whilst this may not necessary result in disciplinary action, it is likely to break down the relationship between you and your employer, which could affect your future prospects within the company, and any references from them should you find another job.

[dt_gap height=”10″ /]As previously mentioned, using social media during working hours is usually prohibited, and choosing to use it to admit how intoxicated you are is never a good idea, as nearly all employers have a drugs/alcohol policy. This would usually constitute gross misconduct and result in dismissal.

Any criminal activity will usually not be accepted by an employer, and it’s likely you would be dismissed. On an additional note, cases of theft and dishonesty are usually frowned upon by the Tribunal, so it’s likely that if you proceeded with a claim through the Court it would be unsuccessful.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]

I think that following the research I undertook for this article, I would suggest the problem may be even larger than I thought. I was able to find all of the above examples in a very short space of time so employees are clearly not aware of the impact their social media comments could have on their livelihood. So in conclusion, the best course of action for any employee to take when it comes to social media and their employer is to not say anything. Whilst you may get frustrated with your job, it is important to remember that a public forum means anyone (including your employer/colleagues) can read it. An example that has been cited in Tribunal’s is that social media is the equivalent of a work notice board – therefore if you wouldn’t walk up and put the comment on the notice board – do not post it to Facebook or Twitter. If this test was applied by the majority of people before they made comments I would suggest social media would be a lot quieter and a lot less people would be losing their jobs over their comments…..
