Workplace Stress – Know the Signs
It’s perfectly natural to feel stressed from time to time, but too much of it can cause big problems both physically and mentally if it becomes ongoing. We spend a huge chunk of our lives at work, so it’s important to recognise signs of workplace stress and when it’s beginning to affect your wellbeing.
Here are five signs of stress that can become issues to your health if left unchecked:
- Worrying about work outside of working hours.
As with every point on this list, worry is normal in moderation – but work worries can creep into your leisure time more and more without you realising it. If you regularly catch yourself running on autopilot because your brain is still at work, share your concerns with a friend or colleague. They probably have no idea how you’re feeling.
- Stress headaches and tiredness.
A stress headache is unpleasant, but will usually pass after a good night’s sleep or some downtime with your favourite hobby. Constant stress headaches can really take it out of you, leading to tiredness, exhaustion and low mood in the long term.
- Tension and anxiety.
The challenges of the working day are enough on their own, without having to contend with tension and anxiety. This can be anything from deadline stress to getting cold sweats, palpitations, or even feeling like you’re about to pass out due to some upcoming event or meeting.
- Waking up worrying.
Dragging yourself out of bed at 6am on a rainy day bad enough, but doing so when you’ve woken up fretting about the day ahead is as exhausting as it is bad for your wellbeing. Acknowledging it is the first step; sharing your concerns with loved ones, colleagues and friends can be a huge relief.
- Loss of sleep.
This is the big one – a good night’s sleep should recharge your batteries and leave you feeling refreshed for the next day. Missing out on a few hours is bad enough, but lying awake night after night can take its toll on all aspects of your physical and mental health in no time at all if left unchecked.
It’s important to do everything possible to keep workplace stress to a minimum. Confide in someone you trust, and if your problems seem to revolve mostly around work, speak to your line manager or HR department. Without telling them, they can’t know how you’re feeling.
