Just imagine this for a moment … there are an estimated 350,000 hit and run accidents in the UK each year, in the last 12 months 27,000 people were seriously injured, and 180 people died from a hit and run.
It’s worth remembering that these are recorded incidents, so the true figure is likely to be much higher.
These are becoming all too common on our roads today – a hit and run happens when a driver chooses to flee the scene of an accident rather than stay and face the consequences. In the UK, the law states that anyone involved in a road incident must provide details of their identity and offer assistance, but the statistics show that this simply isn’t happening.
Many of these hit and run accident drivers are uninsured, and they are trying to avoid getting a penalty for failing to insure their vehicle.
The very nature of a hit and run incident makes it incredibly difficult to prevent, but law enforcement in the UK is doing more to bring the numbers of incidents down, resources and detection methods are improving to bring more offenders to book.
If you are the victim of a hit and run accident then it’s important that you remember as much detail about the offending vehicle as possible, call 999 to report the incident to the police and seek medical help.
If possible take photos of the scene to help with any future claim. The police will help you look for witnesses (anyone around with CCTV or potential onlookers etc.).
If, after an investigation the police are unable to find the person responsible then you can still claim compensation for the incident.
If you do find yourself the unfortunate victim of a hit and run, Oakwood Solicitors are here to help you, and we will make sure that you do not have to go through the recovery process alone.
