What area of law do you specialise in and why?
I practice in the area of Litigation and more recently have specialised in financial litigation.
I am excited that Oakwood Solicitors are market leaders in mortgage litigation matters and are ahead of the game in what is anticipated to be the next scandal to hit the mortgage industry.
This type of litigation is likely to grow rapidly as early data suggests that a significant numbers of lenders have overcharged interest and have added excessive and unfair charges to a clients mortgage account contrary to their agreement.
I have moved to specialise in this area as I would like to build a reputation as one of the leading solicitors in this field and I am passionate about seeking redress for the thousands of borrowers who have been exploited by their lender at a time when they are in financial difficulty and at their most vulnerable.
What inspired you to become a solicitor?
I have had an interest in law since secondary school and this combined with the desire to work in an industry that gives job satisfaction lead me to undertake a Law Degree. I enjoyed learning the academic side of the law and found it fascinating how open to interpretation the law was.
Naively, I had a very unrealistic perception of what a career in law would involve and I quickly discovered that the academic side of the law was very different to the law in practice.
What are the three essential skills you believe a good solicitor should have?
Good communication skills are vital to any role in the legal industry. This goes hand in hand with client care which is one of the fundamental components of any solicitor/ client relationship. It is important to understand the needs of your client and to communication with them in a way that they understand and in a way that gives them trust and confidence in you.
Organisation and time management are also highly important, as is being friendly and approachable.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Achieving a good outcome for clients and knowing that you have assisted them obtaining their desired outcome.
What do you enjoy least about your job?
Having to accept that you can’t win every case.
What is your advice for anyone that wishes to start a legal career?
Get as much legal experience as possible as this will give you first-hand experience of the reality of what working in the legal industry entails.
