It has become more common to see Knife Crime in the news around the UK. Chief Constable Alf Hitchcock, who leads the National Police Chiefs Council taskforce on knife crime, told the London Evening Standard in early March that the average age for carrying knives is getting younger and is currently between 13 and 17 years old.
According to the ONS statistics (Office for National Statistics) there has been a 20% rise in Knife Crime in the UK.
In support of this, a boy aged 17 was recently stabbed In Manchester at 09:00am on the 26th September outside a School. A 15 year old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds, however these are said to not be life threatening and he is stable in Hospital.
The Physical injuries that can occur as a result of knife crime can be life threatening. Usually stab wounds/injuries cause scarring. Dependant on the location of the scarring and the severity, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) may make an award, with the highest award being as a result of scarring to the face this can be an award of up to £11,000 in severe cases.
Being the victim of a vicious knife crime attack can not only cause physical injury, but can lead to Psychological problems as a result of the incident occurring. The CICA state that as long as the mental injury has a substantial adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities over and beyond a period of 6 weeks or more, the victim may be eligible for an award. In serious cases of mental injury as a result of the crime the CICA can make awards up to £27,000, dependant on each case.
