Acid Attacks are unfortunately becoming more and more prevalent within the news recently as the Rising number of Acid Attack victims has almost doubled in the last 10 years. London in particular has seen a sharp rise in Acid Attacks, with 454 reported last year, up from 261 in 2015.

In a recent conference in Manchester on Tuesday, Amber Rudd the Home Sectary for the Conservative Party, vowed to do more to ban under 18’s from buying corrosive substances. They are also looking into preventing people from carrying corrosive substances in public places. The ban would mean that this type of office would be in line with Knife possession, which carries a maximum four year jail term. She hopes that this will crack down on the trend of Acid Attacks within the UK.

In the conference, Ms Rudd said: “Acid attacks are absolutely revolting. Many victims’ lives have been ruined as a result of these malicious and cowardly attacks. Not only do the victims suffer physical scarring as a result of the corrosive substance, they are mentally scarred as well. There have been many victims speaking out recently about their ordeals which has given rise to this ban been put in place.

Under the CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority) rules, dependant on the location of the scarring and the severity the CICA may make an award. The highest award being as a result of scarring to the face this can be up to £11,000 in severe cases. In regards to the Psychological problems the CICA state that as long as the mental injury has a substantial adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities over and beyond a period of 6 weeks or more, the claimant may be eligible for an award. In serious cases of mental injury as a result of the crime the CICA can make awards up to £27,000, dependant on each case.
