Lactalis, a French manufacturer of baby milk formula has ordered a worldwide recall of its product over fears of Salmonella contamination. This follows a limited recall the company issued following reports of 20 infants becoming ill in France. Now more infants have become ill the company has widened the net of its recall and the number of products on the list.
Reports confirm that there is now 26 infants that have come ill in France since the start of December. Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps and sometimes vomiting and fever.
On average, it takes from 12 to 72 hours for the symptoms to develop after swallowing an infectious dose of salmonella.
It’s been reported that the affected Lactalis products have been exported to the UK, China, Taiwan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco, Lebanon, Sudan, Romania, Serbia, Georgia, Greece, Hati, Colombia, Peru.
Lactalis is one of the world’s largest producers of dairy products. It’s believed that the contamination can be traced back to one of the companies drying towers in France where the baby formula is produced. Anyone who may have purchased the formula can return these to the store.
Questions will be asked as to why Lactalis did not issue a full-scale recall, to begin with rather than waiting for more children to become affected.
