Three ‘Must-Dos’ when injured in a Road Traffic Accident

    ARTICLE BY: Lucy Peaty

In an ideal world, accidents wouldn’t happen. Unfortunately, they do, and they can affect any of us at any time. If you’re unlucky enough to be injured in a collision, following these three simple steps can help you to claim the compensation you deserve. So, what should you do if you’ve been injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault?

    Seek medical advice

Whilst this may sound obvious, many people do not seek advice when they should, or form the best place. Whilst the type of medical advice you seek will depend heavily on the severity of your injury, it is important to be diligent, particularly with head or neck injuries. If you are in immediate or intense pain following an accident, it is advisable to ring 999 and seek emergency medical attention. Some injuries, including ‘whiplash’ injuries, are not noticed immediately. Often the onset of these injuries can take up to 48 hours to occur. In this instance a call to 111, or a visit to your GP will be more appropriate. Even a trip to your pharmacist is useful at the very least. There is no harm being cautious and having a quick check to ensure anything sinister is caught early.

    Take notes

Whilst taking notes may remind you of bleak school corridors and the build up to dreaded exams, keeping a note of certain things after an accident could help you to resolve any issues later on. For example, keeping a note of the dates for any days taken off work can help you to claim for loss of earnings. The same premise also goes for any expenses you may have incurred as a result of the accident. Even by keeping receipts for painkillers you can help  minimise the amount of money that you take out of your own pocket. Moreover, keeping notes of the impacts your injury has had on daily life can help to put your injuries into perspective. We almost all have a smart phone, so take that extra 30 seconds to make a quick note of any information you may think relevant.
