According to a survey carried out by recruitment agency Randstad UK – 63% of practising UK nurses who were questioned claimed that pressure at work was having a significantly negative effect on their mental health.

Also, 50% attribute this constant pressure to actual mental conditions, and 21% describing their mental health as ‘poor’. Gender bore very little significance when it came to these latter results, whereas age did – with 50% of 26-30-year-old nurses categorising themselves as being in a poor state of mental wellbeing.

The research was based on a nationwide poll of 300 UK nurses, which suggested that contracts made a difference. 25% of staff doing permanent roles considered themselves roles to be in poor mental health, whereas shift-workers comprised a mere 13% in the same position.

Of the overall surveyed, 30% stated that they believed their mental health was deteriorating, with women being worst off at 31%, with men encompassing 25% suffering a deterioration over the course of the last year. 82% stated that their employer inadequately supported them satisfactorily.

Alarmingly, one in six nurses (or 17% of those surveyed) said they were considering leaving the profession within the next twelve months because of their mental health concerns. This is on top of a further 11% who would also leave, but for other reasons.
