As we look forward to further fundraising opportunities alongside our charity partners throughout 2020, we’d just like to have a glance back at the work we did with Leeds Mencap for Learning Disability Week in June, 2019.
Our Make A Will Week throughout the course of Learning Disability Week gave our Clients the option of receiving a free Will in exchange for a charitable donation towards the care and enrichment of children and young adults with learning disabilities in the Leeds area.
Thanks to the generosity of those who took us up on our offer, together we raised a fantastic £1,629 towards this wonderful cause.
Leeds Mencap writes -“We are proud to be working with Oakwood Solicitors Ltd. In June 2019, as part of Learning Disability Week, Solicitors Charlotte and Katherine helped 27 people with Wills advice and to complete their Wills, as well as offering specialist advice on setting up SEND trusts.”
“We have had some great feedback and we are thrilled to be helping people in this way, as well as receiving donations towards our core services, as a donation to Leeds Mencap was suggested instead of payment to Oakwood Solicitors Ltd.”
About Leeds Mencap
Leeds Mencap is a local and independent charity supporting children with learning disabilities and additional needs in Leeds, along with their parents and siblings.
They support young children to develop skills step by step, alongside finding the right support for parents – which ranges from physiotherapy, adaptations in their home, or finding the right nursery setting with the best all-round support.
Leeds Mencap runs a specialist playroom, youth groups, playschemes and activity days from their centre in East Leeds. It’s here that children and young people aged 0 right up to 25 who have a learning disability can play in a safe environment, have fun, make friends and build important developmental and life skills.
The organisation also helps the parents, by giving them the specialist knowledge, skills and support networks they need to be able to care for their whole family. And they help the siblings – so these children can get time to themselves and have fun with others who understand.
There are enormous challenges for people with learning disabilities and their families, and Leeds Mencap is here to help with whatever is needed.
Although Leeds Mencap is affiliated to Royal Mencap Society/Mencap (the national charity), they receive no funding from them and need to raise money to continue their services.
Feedback for Leeds Mencap
“Without the help of Leeds Mencap, I feel I would still be in that dark, lonely place. I had tried for months to get some support and help to look after my youngest child who has delayed development and complex needs. I had constantly been told I could get nothing and to deal with it! I now feel there is a glimmer of hope and that we can do this!” – One Mum who uses Leeds Mencap‘s family support service
“Words can’t describe the difference Leeds Mencap has made to my daughter and our family – you have given us so much…Thank you for making such a difference.”
