300kg of glass fell onto a work in Australia resulting in severe injuries to his head and shoulder. It is not yet know how the pane of glass came to fall on the sixty-seven-year-old man.
The ambulance crew and a specialist medical team attended the scene and were fast-acting to assist the gentleman.
What is a crush injury?
A crush injury is when a body part is crushed or pressured by an external force (for example, having your foot run over by a machine). This injury type usually occurs when a body part is squeezed between two heavy objects. Serious crush: injuries can involve internal injuries
How can this injury occur?
There can be many common causes of a crush injury. The main few are vehicles in the workplace, falling objects, using workplace machinery.
What can be done to prevent a crush injury in the workplace?
Employers have a duty of care to ensure the safety of their employees, this can be done in a number of ways:
- Providing employees with relevant training
- Providing the correct Protective clothing for any and all tasks.
- Providing protective equipment for machinery.
- Appropriate signage in the workplace.
- Risk assessments being carried out for all tasks and done regularly.
- Regular maintenance of equipment.
