Newcastle care home in special measures following whistle-blowers alerting the CQC to serious failings

Staff concerns about Ella McCambridge Care Home had been ignored, this led to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) conducting an unannounced visit to the care home following tip offs, regarding the issues.

CQC inspectors rated the Care Home inadequate and found “widespread and significant shortfalls” in care. The inspection took place in January. The Care Home which has 47 residents was found to have by the CQC:

    • Gaps in care records
    • Problems with management of medicines
    • No effective system to ensure staff were suitably trained
    • Residents were not always well-supported, cared for or treated with dignity and respect
    • Care plans did not fully reflect residents needs

    Care home negligence

The CQC deputy director of operations in the north, Alison Chilton stated the care home was not “well led” at the time of inspection “which was impacting on all areas of the care people living there received”.

Vanessa Cutler, the firm’s operational director acknowledged that the firm had ‘reliance eon agency workers whose training and documentation had not been checked thoroughly’. Ms Cutler further added that “several records had been destroyed” and the care home’s manager had resigned following “questions regarding their conduct”.

The care home now has a full and dedicated team with new management following intervention as well as the care home has “had meetings with residents and their families and been open and honest about the last few months and had very good feedback”
