Since March 2021, these figures equate to a 77% increase. Over 5,600 doctors accessed the NHS practitioner Health programme in England in the 2022-2023 period alone, with around one third of those considering taking their own lives.
Most reported cases were due to working conditions, with demand only expected to rise during the winter period, which is typically the busiest time of year for the NHS. Founded in London in 2008, the NHS Practitioner Health service provides confidential support to doctors, with other eligible staff also available to access the service as of 2021.

Around 90% of user accessing the service were doctors, with an over-representation of these figures being from GPs who accounted for 40% of the total. The British Medical Association (BMA) stated that the figures were a “stark and painful reminder of the immense pressures” faced by GPs.
According to a report by the General Medical Council (GMC), more than 40% of doctors felt that they couldn’t cope with their weekly workloads in 2022, which was an increase from 30% who felt this way in 2021.
A spokesperson from the Department of health and Social Care stated: “The wellbeing of all those working in the NHS is vital and extensive coaching and support and practitioner mental health services are available for all staff.
“There are more than 2,000 additional doctors and 31,000 additional staff working in general practice compared to June 2019 as well as a record number of trainees.”
