Oakwood Solicitors is proud to announce Lupus UK as our Charity of the Year for 2026. Honouring the organisation’s tireless dedication to supporting thousands of individuals nationwide.

    Who is Lupus UK?

Lupus UK provide vital support to people living with lupus and their families through helplines, support groups, online communities, and trusted information. This helps people feel less isolated and better able to manage a complex and often unpredictable condition.

Proudly funding important medical research to improve diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately find better outcomes, and one day a cure for lupus. Producing reliable, up-to-date information about lupus and advocating for improved services and recognition of the condition across the UK.

Lupus UK exists to ensure that no one has to face lupus alone, while working towards a future where the condition is better understood and more effectively treated.

    What is Lupus?

Lupus is known as a condition where your immune system, instead of only attacking germs, mistakenly attacks your own body, affecting the joints, skin, kidneys, and more.

This is why it is called a “chronic systemic autoimmune condition” disease. Because it can mimic many other illnesses, it’s sometimes called “the great imitator.”

Lupus can be difficult to diagnose and is often misunderstood. While lupus does not have a cure yet, modern treatments mean most people can keep it under control and live long, fulfilling lives.

Therefore, Lupus UK works to raise awareness among the public and healthcare professionals to improve understanding, earlier diagnosis, and better care.

Understanding the Four Types of Lupus

Lupus is not a single disease but a collection of autoimmune conditions. While they share common characteristics, they differ significantly in their impact and duration.

    1. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): The most common form of the disease, SLE is systemic, meaning it can affect any organ or part of the body, including the joints, kidneys, heart, and lungs.
    2. Cutaneous Lupus:  This form primarily targets the skin. While some individuals may have both SLE and cutaneous lupus, this type often manifests as various rashes or lesions, such as those found in discoid lupus.
    3. Drug-Induced Lupus: A temporary condition triggered by a reaction to specific medications. Unlike chronic lupus, symptoms typically resolve within weeks or months once the offending medication is discontinued.
    4. Neonatal Lupus: A rare condition affecting new born babies, often characterized by a temporary skin rash. While most cases resolve within 6 to 12 months without long-term issues, these children may have a slightly higher risk of developing other autoimmune conditions later in life.
