Increase in Injuries Caused by ‘Technology Abuse’

Increased use of electronic devices and other newer technologies has led to a (perhaps predictable) rise in traumatology consultations because of neuro-musculoskeletal injuries, according to a Spanish report.

Studies suggest that the average person spends a whopping five and a half hours per day connected to their mobile phone and/or computer in this ‘always online’ world, which makes this increase in reported cases due to technology abuse somewhat understandable.

What are the most commonly reported injuries?

These conditions typically stem from the repetition of movement in the hands and fingers for extended sessions, such as a busy working week or a period of idling on the internet at home, to give just two examples.

Technology Abuse

What are the symptoms?

Signs that you may be suffering from the onset of an injury through overuse can be a constant tingling sensation in the affected hand or hands – especially at night time, alongside muscular pain further up the limb.

Other symptoms may be felt in the neck or back, thanks to awkward posture often required – whether seated, laid or stood – to stare at a monitor, tablet or tiny mobile phone screen.

How do I lessen the risk of injury?

It is recommended that you cut down the amount of time spent using whichever devices you believe to be the source of the onset of pain. This may be achieved by consciously setting aside your device at home where possible. You can also lessen the likelihood of neck and back strain by holding or looking at the screen at eye level.

Exercising the joints more often when not typing or texting may be a good way to build up muscle strength. If this is a particular problem at work, it may be necessary to raise it with your health and safety representative, manager or HR person.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Are there other common injuries caused by Technology Abuse?

  • Tension, the sensation of weight or overburdening in shoulders or neck
  • Headaches and/or dizziness from staring at a screen
  • Pain/stiffness in hands or fingers
  • Different alterations of the cervical spine or blocking of segments of the vertebral spine
  • Pain in the frontal and cervical regions, pressure in the ear canal or eyeball
  • Muscle weakness
