Overwhelmed Accident and Emergency Department Leads to Death of 14-year-old

An inquest in Lincolnshire heard how the Accident and Emergency department at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston was so ‘chaotic’ that nurses tried to use a vital piece of equipment upside down.

Jessica Ashton-Pyatt 14 was admitted to Accident and Emergency in October 2012 suffering from severe stomach pains. She was vomiting blood and required urgent medical attention. On arrival at the hospital members of the resuscitation team were reported as “failing to get involved” and appeared overwhelmed by the serious situation.

An attending paramedic told the inquest how one of the hospital nurses attempted to put a bone gun (a piece of equipment to connect an intravenous drip) into Miss Ashton-Pryatt upside down. There was also a vital delay in providing treatment because a defibrillator was not fully charged.

Miss Ashton-Pryatt died due to a ruptured stomach. The inquest recorded a verdict of death through natural causes and said that whilst the treatment Miss Ashton-Pryatt received did not contribute to her death it certainly did not save her life.

Mrs Pryatt Jessica’s mother told the Daily Mail that she is now considering legal action against the hospital:
“I am disgusted and angry at the way staff at the hospital treated Jessica. Some of the staff were told to help with her resuscitation and they stood by and watched like it was some sort of show.”

The hospital trust involved is the United Lincolnshire hospitals Trust which recently had special measures imposed on it after being identified as one of a number of Trusts with an excessive number of patient deaths.

If you believe a family member’s death was caused by the medical negligence of a healthcare provider you may be able to claim compensation. Contact the medical negligence team at Oakwood Solicitors to discuss your potential claim further.
