Everything You Do is Right Day

Apparently, today is ‘Everything You Do is Right Day’. Honestly, that is a thing!

It follows yesterday’s ‘Everything You Do is Wrong Day’, which (if you are anything like my household) feels like every day!

On a serious note, however, it can help to raise self esteem or even just a wry smile to think about things that have gone right. Try and channel your ‘inner wisdom’ and consider those things that you have got right over the last few days, few months or even the last year.

    Everything You Do is Right

It is so easy to see and focus on the things we do wrong, indeed we are almost programmed to do so. Such skills may have helped us survive many years ago, when scanning the horizon for predators, but in today’s world it can lead to serious issues such as depression, anxiety or just a general sense of unease.

In my home we try and think of things we are grateful for before going to sleep at night. It just focuses the mind on positivity before closing your eyes and going to sleep.

Personally, if I don’t try and focus on the positive before I turn out the light, my mind ruminates on worries or things that went wrong throughout the day.  I then spend the night tossing and turning, restless and without good rest.

So this evening, I intend sit down with my children and, instead of attempting to correct them on things that I think they may have done wrong, concentrate on what has gone right. For example, my eldest has challenges around food. So, rather than bemoaning the fact he hasn’t eaten his broccoli, I will try and be encouraging about the fact that he at least attempted to.

Similarly, throughout my day at work, I will try and concentrate on the things that went right. If I consider yesterday as an example, I may think I did ‘wrong’ by failing to tackle the long ‘to do’ list I had set out for myself.

However, if I thought about it more carefully, I may have been able to turn this into the fact I did the ‘right’ thing by allaying the worry of a client by considering the issue on their file straight away, putting my ‘to do’ list to one side for a few hours.

Yesterday morning I was annoyed with myself when I ate one of the biscuits in the kitchen (why did I not have self control?), but I could have considered how ‘right’ it was to take a few moments away from my desk to make a brew and treat myself to that biscuit after a long and difficult telephone call.

So, perhaps it is not so much about doing things ‘right’, more about changing the way we see the events that have happened throughout the day.  Life can be challenging in many ways and just altering your perspective can improve your mood and how you see the day.

My late mother always used to say ‘every day is a gift’ – today try and see it that way and enjoy all the things you did right.
