HC-One: Britain’s largest came home operator is set to close one of its care homes in Cambridgeshire later this month after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the home to be ‘inadequate’.

The CQC investigation came following concerns from three residents’ family members after they sadly passed away whilst under the care of HC-One in The Elms Residential Home, Cambridgeshire.

The CQC found the home to be ‘not safe’ and people were found to be ‘at risk of avoidable harm’. Multiple occasions were found where residents hadn’t been given their prescribed medicines, which may have or can lead to have significant consequences.

Louise Broddle, the head of inspection for adult social care at the CQC stated “Standards of care at the Elms were unacceptable. Peoples needs and preferences weren’t being met, including end-of-life care, and they weren’t being treated with dignity or respect”.

The executive director of HC-One has admitted shortcomings and stated “we are clear we have not provided the standard of care at The Elms that residents and their loved ones deserve”.

Before an individual becomes a resident within a care home, a care plan is drafted to assess their needs and ensure the same are met. As shown with the above findings, these care plans are sometimes not followed.

Where the needs of individuals are not met there is a significant risk of harm, including but not limited to; malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, medication errors, falls etc. all of which can lead to complications with medical treatment and in the worst instance the death of an individual.

Who can bring about a claim?

Poor care and treatment of a loved one is unacceptable in any circumstance. If you consider that your loved one has suffered as a result of negligence within a care setting, they or yourself may be entitled to bring about a clinical negligence claim.
