Without due care and attention, bedsores can develop quickly for patients who are restricted from movement for large amounts of time. Preventing bedsores can often be critical.
If left untreated, bedsores can lead to sepsis and even premature, preventable death. No excuse is acceptable for a patient in care developing such a condition.
How do bedsores form on patients in care?
Age is often a big factor in lack of movement and formation of bedsores, as are a lack of standard hygiene routines and other medical conditions. Sores form due to restricted blood flow to the area in question, particularly common in pressure points such as the heels, back and buttocks.
Without being repositioned often by nurses, or having sat in an ‘accident’ for any length of time, the patient is at ongoing risk of a sore developing and other infections.
What are the best methods of preventing bedsores?
Care homes and hospitals have a duty of care to their charges, so it is imperative that regular movement routines occur at least every two hours, as well as checks made to bedding and clothing to ensure that they are dry. pressure-reducing mattresses, pillows and cushions and other such aids can also be used to help protect the skin.
What should I do if I detect or suspect a bedsore on a relative?
If you see one or believe that a bedsore has formed, it must be reported to an on-site doctor or the home/ward management immediately. Keep a record of everyone you’ve spoken to in the matter and also of staff who have dealt with your relative’s care.
Seeking legal advice is also highly recommended – not only might you be able to claim for damages, but you will hopefully prevent such a situation from happening again.
