Cardiff and Vale Health Board sued for £10 million

It has been reported that the parents of an 11 year old boy are suing Cardiff and Vale Health Board for approximately £10 million, after he lost both his legs.

Romeo who was 3 at the time he fell seriously ill, and a few days later had to have his legs amputated above the knees.

His parents claim that the University Hospital of Wales did not correctly diagnose his condition for more than 36 hours. The family alleges that if dealt with sooner, Romeo would not have lost his legs, only some toes.

    Health Board sued

In the claim it is alleged that Romeo was initially treated for Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) which causes small haemorrhages and a widespread rash which usually last a few weeks without treatment.

Romeo was actually suffering from purpura fulminans (PF), which causes skin to die rapidly. This affects around one in every 500,000 to one million births.

It is probable that Romeo will require prosthetic treatment amounting to some several tens of thousands of pounds. However, there is still a possibility that he may be wheelchair bound for the remainder of his life.

It is saddening to hear that such a young child has suffered so severely and even more so when the injuries could have been avoided. We hope that Romeo receives the desired outcome and he is able to lead a long and healthy life with the assistance of aids both now and in the future.
