More Ambulance strikes within the NHS across England and Wales

As we head into another week, strikes within the NHS continue with further debates over pay. Today, Monday 20th February, ambulance workers across England and Wales are set to walk out again, which is going to cause more disruption and is likely to affect thousands throughout the nation.

    More ambulance strikes

This will continue throughout the week, with ambulance strikes set to occur on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th February.

NHS England have advised that the strikes will only affect those patient who are classed as a ‘Category 2 Emergency or below. This means that those suffering with illnesses/injuries such as strokes and major burns will have to wait longer for an ambulance. It is said that all Category 1 emergencies will be responded to within a sufficient time.

But what is classed as a Category 1 emergency?

Those who call 999 with the following illness or injuries:

    • Cardiac or respiratory arrest
    • Serious allergic reactions
    • Unconsciousness / non-responsive

All other illness or injuries will fall into categories 2-4 of ambulatory care.

    What does this mean?

People who fall into all other ambulance categories (2-4) will be left waiting significantly longer than usual for an ambulance to arrive. If your condition is not an emergency, people have been told to contact 111 rather than 999.

The NHS has advised those suffering with non-life threating illnesses and injuries are unlikely to receive 999 care. As a result, it is likely that delays in treatment will occur. Whilst this does not always result in significant harm to a patient, this outcome will unfortunately be the case for some people throughout the nation.

If you consider that you have suffered harm as a result of the recent NHS strike action, contact Oakwood Solicitors on 0113 200 9720 for a free consultation and legal advice with a member of our clinical negligence department to see what steps you are able to take moving forward.
