More strike action has recently commenced within the NHS as a result of further disputes over pay after the Government have failed to meet the demands of medical unions.

The most recent strike action is that of Junior Doctors who are undergoing a 4-day strike, commencing on Monday 10th April.

NHS England has warned that this weeks industrial action will cause “unparalleled disruption” within the NHS. It is estimated that over 350,000 appointments across the country will be cancelled due to staffing levels and increased pressures throughout the service.

This is alongside the current waiting lists for surgeries and other treatments which appears to have spiralled out of control in recent years leaving some patients waiting a number of years for treatment.

Despite staff working hard to meet the needs of their patients, the strike action will cause disruptions to diagnosis’, treatments and general healthcare needs as staff are stretched throughout the services across the country.

The Government continue to state that the requested pay rises set out by the British Medical Association, of a 35% increase, continue to be unreasonable and they will not enter into negotiations with the Union until they revise their starting point for negotiations. As such, it is likely that the delays are going to continue until the matters are resolved with amicable agreement.

Where patients are required to wait so long for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, this can cause a prolonged period of pain and suffering as a result of their presenting condition. It can also lead to a patient’s condition deteriorating, specifically if a significant length of time has elapsed without treatment.

Not only can it have an affect on physical health, but it may also lead to an affect on a patient psychological health.
