Over 400 Unsafe Products Confiscated by Trading Standards

Hundreds of potentially unsafe products have been confiscated by the Hampshire County Council Trading Standards.

The potentially unsafe products were obtained by the council Trading Standards officers at special inspection points along the M27.

Officers seized the goods yesterday, including: ultra violet nail lamps, toys, wax heaters, nail dryers, garden machinery, gas powered scooters and electrical chargers.

Of the items confiscated there were some counterfeit goods including Angry Birds toys and 8000 fake Rubik’s Cubes. These were intended to be given out at Santa’s grotto.

The electrical goods seized didn’t have the correct protection against electric shocks. The plugs were counterfeit and lots of products had no instructions on how to use them or where to go for help.

Trading Standards took the garden machinery which they said was dangerous.

Some of these machines had pipes which were too short and couldn’t be safely connected. When tested one of the brake leavers broke on the first use.

Read our Accidents caused by faulty products page here. If you have suffered injury at the hands of a faulty or counterfeit product, you may be eligible to make a claim for product liability.

    Limitation

In respect of product liability, there are two levels to the Limitation of such claims. Firstly, any claim, including personal injury must be brought within 10 years of the product being brought to market.  This is the date the product is made available to the public.

However, if the claim does include personal injury, you have three years from the date of the action (i.e. from the date of injury) or three years from the date of knowledge (i.e. three years from the date you knew the injury was caused by the defective product). The latter being particularly important when bringing a claim for defective medical products.
