As April is National Stress Awareness Month, here is some advice on how to deal with work when it all feels like too much:
1. Think positively
Try not to worry! It’s easier said than done when you have work piling up, but worrying does not help the situation at all. Try and focus on what action needs to be taken and how you are going to do it instead of feeling anxious about the fact you have to do it.
2. Stay in Control
Try to concentrate only on the aspects of your job that you have control over, there is no point in concerning yourself with things that you cannot change and concerning yourself with them only leads to stress.
3. Focus
Try and minimise your workload by coming up with templates and procedures that you can use to minimise time and increase productivity.
4. Work/Life Balance
Learn to switch off when you leave the office. Staying up thinking about what you have to do the next day is, in all honesty, utterly pointless, and only has the effect of affecting you mentally. The work will be there tomorrow, go home and relax!
5. Learn to cope
It is amazing how the simplest of techniques can make you feel better during the working day. This can either be with the assistance of simple breathing exercises or a walk at lunchtime. It is also beneficial that when you encounter difficult colleagues to tell yourself “it’s their problem, not mine”.
Although stress is not in itself a medically recognised condition, it is certainly recognised as a catalyst or contributing factor for the development of psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety. Stress can also serve as a vehicle for physical problems such as obesity and heart disease, as the lifestyle of some people deteriorates due to pressure at work.
