Sadly, 42% of marriages in England and Wales end in divorce.
The only ground for a divorce in England and Wales is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.
This is established by proving one of five specified facts. Three of these facts require the couple to have been speared for period of at least two years.
However, for those wanting a “quickie” divorce as they do not want to wait or cannot wait until they have been separated at least two years then they have no alternative but issue proceedings on either adultery or unreasonable behaviour, which naturally are conceived as the blame facts.
This in itself can turn what was at the outset an amicable divorce into a hostile and resentful divorce.
However, this does not have to be the case and there are steps you can take to maintain an amicable divorce.
1. Keep all channels of communication open;
2. Be willing to listen to the other person’s point of view and their reasoning;
3. Don’t resort to name calling or personal & critical remarks;
4. Agree a specific time to discuss matters concerning your marriage and separation and restrict discussions to those times only to avoid escalation of emotions and issues.
5. Give each other space if you are living in the same household and
6. Put the needs of your children first
