BAN THE TAPE

Following on from our recent coverage, outlining the complications of mesh implants, our friends down under have banned the use of vaginal mesh implants. This is the ultimate indication that vaginal mesh and transvaginal tape operations are not fit for purpose.

It seems impossible now for the UK to continue to use mesh implants given the Australian review found that “the benefits do not outweigh the risks these products pose to patients”. Likewise, it is reported NICE (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence) will recommend mesh implants are to be used only in research matters and are to be banned in all other instances in the UK.

In agreement with this move is Kath Sansom, the founder of the campaign group “sling the mesh”, who commented to Sky News that ‘The TGA announcement in Australia is proof of the growing realisation of the global scandal of surgical mesh implants. In my opinion it is yet more proof of worldwide institutional denial and how those tasked with monitoring patient safety have failed on an epic level.’

Here at Oakwood Solicitors we praise Australia for making the bold and necessary steps to avoid further heartache. It is brave of them to stand up and we encourage and hope that the UK will follow suit.
