Botched: The Cost of Failed Cosmetic Procedures

After recent investigations, it is thought that a Government ‘campaign’ will be launched to warn the public about the potential implications that cosmetic surgery can carry.

From physical deformities and psychological effects on patients to the economic drain of treatment on the NHS, ‘botched’ procedures are a cost to more than just the unlucky patients and should be acknowledged as such.

    Cost of Failed Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic surgery refers to the technical and intricate procedures in which areas of the body are altered. Any cosmetic procedure should be carried out by a trained specialist in a sterile environment, but regrettably, this is often not the case.

When considered within the context of an increasing number of cosmetic procedures being undertaken nationwide, it is unsurprising that the number of botched surgeries has also risen.

In recent months alone, there has been widespread media coverage of fatal ‘Brazilian Butt Lifts’ and unsightly swollen lips. To the individuals, these failed procedures can, and have, had deadly consequences. Even at the less serious end of the spectrum, individuals can be left feeling vulnerable and insecure, most likely more so than before they opted to undertake the procedure in the first place.

This is particularly saddening when considering that the reasons behind many cosmetic procedures are insecurities fuelled by low self-esteem. Ultimately, the physical and mental cost of botched cosmetic procedures is immense for those ill-fated enough to experience them.

Furthermore, the economic implications of failed procedures can be considered astronomical. Firstly, on top of the potential physical and psychological effects of botched procedures, the cost to the individual can be significant.

Whilst it is hard to generalise an exact figure for the losses of people involved in botched procedures, looking at the average price of botulinum toxin injections (commonly known as ‘Botox’) a single failed procedure could set you back almost £300.00, not including any follow up procedures that may needed to be paid for.

The expensive of failed procedures is also evident to the NHS. In more serious cases, such as overdoses of fillers, an individual may require immediate medical attention, and possibly require hospitalisation in an intensive care unit which can cost the NHS an average of £2000.00 per night.

As evident, the economic cost of failed procedures can be substantial to both the individual and the taxpayer.

Overall, the cost of botched procedures is multidimensional with the effects spanning across physical, psychological, and economic fields for both those directly and indirectly involved.

Whilst we cannot turn back the hands of time, we can look to educate those who are looking to undertake cosmetic procedures of the implications they could face. For instance, always look to receive treatment from a qualified expert, who has both good experience and reviews by other patients.
