Can Covid-19 cause tinnitus or hearing loss?

Home » News & Knowledge » Can Covid-19 cause tinnitus or hearing loss?

I am sure by now that anyone reading this article will likely have heard and read enough about the COVID-19 pandemic. However, something that has recently been brought to our attention is the potential link between COVID-19, Novel Coronavirus, hearing loss and tinnitus.

As industrial disease solicitors, often dealing with a number of client’s suffering with Noise Induced Hearing Loss and Tinnitus, a potential new, previously unknown cause of hearing loss and tinnitus requires some thought for those now and who might be affected by it in the future.

Covid-19 cause tinnitus

It is not disputed that the vast majority of COVID-19 symptoms, mild in particular are related to breathing, coughing and cold/flu like symptoms. We acknowledge that some, unfortunately, suffer considerably more severe, sometimes fatal, symptoms.

It now however appears that COVID-19 has been considered to have further potential neurological affects not initially known at the outset of this disease.

It appears in a study of 214 patients that 36.4% of patients had neurological symptoms some having had damages caused to their inner hear, ultimately effecting their hearing.

It is accepted that the above is a small study however, there is concern that over time, it will become clear that those who have had some neurological symptoms may potentially have had an affect on their hearing as well.

When it comes to tinnitus, there is little evidence to suggest that covid-19 would be a direct cause however it appears there may have been an increase in the presentation or experience of tinnitus due to socio-psychological factors.

Those factors being large populations isolating and trying to avoid infection relating in an increase in other psychological symptoms which may increase the likelihood of a person experiencing tinnitus.

Overall it appears that the pandemic is likely to be shown to have had a wider impact on our senses and mental health that ever initially imagined.

Here at Oakwood Solicitors, we understand that burden that hearing loss and tinnitus puts on person. We have a wealth of experience in dealing with clients with these and many other conditions on a daily basis and offer compassion to each client no matter what their injury or condition.

If you have suffered with hearing loss, tinnitus, any mental health or any other injuries which you believe were brought about as the negligent actions of another we would be happy to listen and discuss your situation and offer advice on your next steps.
