Oakwood Solicitors is delighted to announce that Charlotte Bandawe has been appointed to the prestigious GOV.UK Court of Protection Panel of Deputies for the North of England.

A Position of Trust and Expertise

Panel deputies are a select group of professional deputies appointed directly by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG).

The Court of Protection relies on this list when no one else, such as a family member or close friend, is willing or able to act for someone who lacks mental capacity.

As a Panel deputy, Charlotte will be responsible for managing the financial affairs of individuals who are unable to do so themselves, ensuring their interests are protected under the strict standards set by the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

    Understanding the Court of Protection

The Court of Protection is a specialist court established to protect the rights of individuals who lack the capacity to make specific decisions.

    Its powers include:

    • Determining Capacity: Deciding if an individual can make a particular decision.
    • Appointing Deputies: Assigning professionals like Charlotte to handle ongoing financial or welfare matters.
    • LPA/EPA Oversight: Deciding on the validity of Lasting or Enduring Powers of Attorney and removing deputies or attorneys who fail in their duties.

What does this mean for Oakwood Clients?

Charlotte’s appointment reinforces Oakwood Solicitors’ position as a leader in Court of Protection matters in the North of England.

While the appointment is a personal achievement for Charlotte, it benefits all our clients by:

    1. Ensuring Expert Oversight: Clients receive guidance backed by the highest regulatory standards (the OPG Deputy Standards).
    2. Bespoke Support: Charlotte is supported by a caring, knowledgeable team, ensuring each client receives a tailored service that respects their unique circumstances.
    3. Local Expertise: With a focus on the North of England circuit, we provide accessible, high-level legal support right where our community needs it most. Charlotte is a member of the Leeds local community panel working with Leeds City Council to ensure that people within Leeds can live well with Dementia.

Reflecting on the appointment, Charlotte Bandawe comments:

“It is an immense privilege to be selected as a Panel deputy, which is a position of great responsibility when providing essential safeguarding assistance to a vulnerable person whilst managing their affairs.”

“It is very different from other areas of law, as we know each individual has their own needs and requirements, and it is therefore essential to know your client to ensure that you can make the decisions in their best interests and to manage their affairs, which are personal to the client.”

Abbie Keech, Managing Director of Oakwood Solicitors, commented:

“I am really pleased with the appointment of Charlotte Bandawe to the Court of Protection Panel of Deputies for the North of England. Charlotte is such a knowledgeable and understanding solicitor to all her clients, future clients, and their families.”
