    Construction Worker Falls 30ft at Stoke-on-Trent’s Winter Wonderland Attraction

    With Christmas fast approaching, we are all thinking about visiting various Christmas themed attractions, such as Winter Wonderland, Christmas German markets and so on. The creation of such attractions, however, comes with its own dangers.

    The Christmas Winter Wonderland in Stoke-on-Trent was due to open to the public on Thursday, November 14th at 4:30pm. However, during the construction of the event’s funfair attractions, a worker, in his early 20’s, was tasked with the construction of a rollercoaster that was included in the festive pop-up theme park.

    The construction worker fell 30ft on Saturday 19th October 2019 and remains in a serious condition. The fall resulted in the worker sustaining multiple injuries including broken wrists and a fractured pelvis, however, it is not yet known how the worker fell. A city council spokesman is requesting that any witnesses who can offer some information, to come forward.

    It has been noted that the police and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) have been informed of the incident and will now be required to investigate the matter.

    Whilst there are always time constraints and a sense of urgency around any construction work, especially around Christmas, certain policies and procedures should always be in place to ensure that the workplace is safe.

    Natalie Ball of Oakwood Solicitors offers some insight into the safety measures that employers should consider when constructing themed attractions:

    1. That the appropriate equipment is provided;
    2. All relevant training has been provided;
    3. All policies and procedures are followed;
    4. All PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is provided;
    5. The weather conditions – do all surfaces have protection against slippery floors etc; and
    6. Is all the correct signage up to warn workers of the dangers?
