Tasha Hughes has come forward to tell her story in a recent article for the Mail Online to raise awareness in contraceptive implants risking lives.
This comes after she was suffering crippling headaches after choosing the implant as her method of contraception when she was 17 years old, little did she know that it would have such severe consequences.
The implant stops women becoming pregnant by creating a hormonal imbalance within the body.
Following implantation she began to experience severe headaches and loss of vision.
Speaking to Caters News, she said: “The pain was so severe that I couldn’t concentrate, but my friends thought I was being overdramatic. The headache lasted for two weeks straight, so I knew something was seriously wrong as this had never happened before.”
After a number of misdiagnoses it was discovered that the implant had caused a build-up of fluid on the brain known as intracranial hypertension.
This life-threatening reaction meant that Miss Hughes was rushed into surgery whereby she underwent a procedure to release the fluid.
Miss Hughes has been left with significant scarring to her head and reduction to her vision which is ongoing today, some three years after the procedure.
This is not the first-time calls have been made to ban such implants.
In 2011 similar calls were made when one particular implant left over 600 woman pregnant.
The manufacturers argue that they cannot foresee or test for the relatively small numbers of people these implants may affect adversely.
Experts have dismissed any warnings and advise that the benefits of these products are proven and safe.
It would seem that they cannot deny that they may not be suitable for a very small number of people but they remain one of the most effective contraceptives for woman.
