Damage caused by clear braces purchased online

BBC News has reported on the damage that can be caused by clear braces that have been ordered online.

There has been a rise in tele-dentistry in the wake of COVID. Tele-dentistry is where a person receives dental treatment online without or with minimal dental appointments. This is a considerably cheaper option to try and fix a person’s smile as there are fewer dental costs.

    Damage caused by clear braces

The clear braces have been a success for many. However, as the BBC article notes there are many that have suffered life-changing alterations to their teeth which have left them in pain and require surgical intervention.

Whilst the use of tele-dentistry is itself not automatically negligent the General Dental Council says that there is no effective substitute for an in-person clinical examination. An in-person assessment before the use of such clear braces is consistent with the Dental Guidelines.

Those who have braces ordered online are unlikely to have the same care and attention that would be provided by a dentist. There is also no guarantee that communications that are had are with a qualified dentist. The 3D scans and DIY teeth mould that are used are not sufficient and can lead to long-lasting changes to a person’s teeth.

Oakwood Solicitors have been instructed on negligent online clear brace treatment. Therefore, if you have online invisible braces/Invisalign and have suffered from an altered bite, pain, bleeding or any other damage you may be entitled to bring about a clinical negligence claim.
