As of April 2026, Cleveland Police has been investigating allegations regarding Kirklevington Detention Centre for twelve years.

What was Kirklevington Detention Centre?

Operating from the 1960s and into the 1990s, Kirklevington Detention Centre was designed to deliver a ‘short, sharp shock’ to young offenders aged from 14 to 17. Since then, it has become the focus of hundreds of claims involving serious allegations of physical and sexual abuse by staff.

That we know of, Cleveland Police has received reports from 818 victims and interviewed 21 suspects, highlighting the widespread nature of the abuse at the site.

What is Operation Magnolia, and is it still ongoing?

Cleveland Police began investigating Kirklevington with the launch of Operation Magnolia in 2014, aiming to examine a large number of allegations which continue to come forward. The investigation is still ongoing today, having reached the end of its twelfth year as of April 2026.
