This has left many to wonder how much longer they will have to wait to receive some form of justice, as Oakwood Solicitors has now signed up over 500 clients who are awaiting the eventual conclusion and opening of its compensation scheme for the alleged historic abuse.
We thank our clients for their patience, and understand their frustration in having to wait so long. The outcome of this investigation is long overdue, and a great many people wish to take the opportunity to receive some form of justice.
As we wait for further updates from Cleveland Police, we would like to recap on what we already know about Kirklevington Detention Centre and what has happened so far.

Operating from the 1960s and into the 1990s, Kirklevington Detention Centre was designed to deliver a ‘short, sharp shock’ to young offenders aged from 14 to 17. Since then, it has become the focus of hundreds of claims involving serious allegations of physical and sexual abuse by staff.
That we know of, Cleveland Police has received reports from 818 victims and interviewed 21 suspects, highlighting the widespread nature of the abuse at the site.
Cleveland Police began investigating Kirklevington with the launch of Operation Magnolia in 2014, aiming to examine a large number of allegations which continue to come forward. The investigation is still ongoing today, having reached the end of its twelfth year as of April 2026.
Yes, you can put yourself forward with us even though the police investigation has yet to conclude. This will not make the compensation scheme open any sooner, but it will enable us to get as much information together and have your case fully ready to submit on the day they begin accepting claims.
Any civil compensation claim for abuse at Kirklevington Detention Centre would be brought against the Ministry of Justice, as the Home Office was responsible for the facility during its years of operation.
Oakwood Solicitors agrees to work on your Kirklevington Detention Centre abuse claim on a ‘no-win, no-fee’ basis. If your claim is unsuccessful, you will not be expected to pay us a penny.
If your claim is successful we take a percentage of the compensation, which is fully explained before you sign up. This means that the only time we will receive money is if we have successfully concluded your claim.
We have a dedicated, in-house team handling historic abuse claims. Our Solicitors and Paralegals have many years of combined experience in handling such matters, both within the Civil courts and through official compensation schemes.
From the beginning of your claim through to the end, you will have a dedicated case handler working on your file, providing regular updates and answering any questions you may have. We handle your claim in the strictest of confidence with the high level of respect you deserve.
