Lara Massarella – Work Experience Testimony

Lara Massarella is a Legal Assistant in our Medical Negligence team, but she started her time with us in a slightly different way to most of our staff. Lara was hired after a successful work experience placement.

We asked her if she would share her thoughts about her time with us prior to being a full member of the team, and she happily took the time to do so. Read on to hear her thoughts in this work experience testimony:

Lara said:

“Before joining for work experience at oakwood solicitors in the clinical negligence department I knew I was interested in law as a career path but did not know where that would take me.

“I started work experience at the start of my third year at university, before this I had interests in personal injury, employment, and company law. I will graduate in summer and plan to further my legal education and become a solicitor.

“I had never had work experience before Oakwood Solicitors, so I did not know what to expect. I was hoping to learn about clinical negligence and the basic procedures in actioning a claim. However, I never thought how welcome and valued I would feel in the whole process.

“The team really throwing you in the deep end, in the best way, since day one I felt involved and that I was not simply observing someone else do the work but to do it myself.

“Whilst doing work experience, I had experience in sorting records, risk assessing medical records in the early stages of a claim, creating a chronology for the claim and drafting legal documents such as a letter of first notification.

“The Medical Negligence team at Oakwood Solicitors made me feel welcome from the very beginning of work experience and settled all nerves of doing something new almost straight away.

“Work experience at Oakwood solicitors has helped my studies by giving context to discussions which before felt very abstract and allows me to see how my law degree can translate to the real world.

“I developed many skills whilst doing work experience here such as; a developed writing style, confidence and ability to work in a team, all of which have helped my studies at university.”
