An unfortunate listeria outbreak, connected with pre-prepared salads and sandwiches, has caused three fatalities and three serious illnesses at Manchester University NHS Trust and Aintree University Hospital. It is believed that some of the meals were given to patients, whilst some were put up for sale within the hospitals.
The supplier, ‘The Good Food Chain’, who provide food to numerous NHS trusts across the UK stopped their production voluntarily whilst investigations are carried out, and withdrew the meals as soon as a connection between the incidents were suspected.

Subsequent tests of meats provided to them by ‘North Country Cooked Meats’, distributed via ‘North Country Quality Foods’ produced positive results for the listeria strain, both of which also stopped production voluntarily so that the Food Standards Agency and Environmental Health can complete their investigations. They state that the investigations have been carried out quickly to get to the root of the outbreak and in order to minimise any risks to the public.
Illnesses caused by listeria are usually mild in nature, requiring no treatment. However, as seen in these cases, it can have a much more detrimental effect on certain people – such as those with health issues and also women who are pregnant. A causal link in such cases can be difficult to establish as the time between exposure and commencement of symptoms can be as much as up to seventy days.
Following the incidents, officials maintain that risks are low and there have been no connected cases outside of those reported, but they will continue with their enquiries in order to protect those most likely to be affected.
