In support of the great work done by the St Thomas Lupus Trust we have had a fun day here at Oakwood Solicitors to raise a bit of money for this great charity.
Laura Honkanen from Oakwood Solicitors explains “Lupus is an autoimmune system illness where the body becomes ‘overactive’ and attacks itself by inflaming healthy cells, tissues and organs. It can affect any organ of the body, including nervous system and joints and can range from mild to life-threatening.”
“Most common symptoms are extreme tiredness, a rash most commonly on the face, joint pain and swelling and hair loss. The cause is not known and there is no cure. The term ‘lupus’ is most often used to describe a more severe form of the condition called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), however there are also discoid and subacute cutaneous lupus.”
The St. Thomas Lupus Trust was set up as a registered charity in 1991 by Professor Graham Hughes. Its aim was, and still is, to support lupus research at St. Thomas’ and Guys Hospitals and raise awareness of lupus. Today it finances 100% of the lupus research costs at both hospitals.
