Morrisons has reportedly approached more stores to offer hourly-paid staff redundancy.

According to a local news outlet, staff at its Bradford-based Mayo Avenue store were asked to register their interest for voluntary redundancy if they wished to.

Morrisons are said to have approached five stores across the country to offer a voluntary redundancy scheme – and three of the stores are located in Bradford.

    The full statement said:

“We have invited our hourly paid colleagues in our Mayo Avenue store to register their interest for voluntary redundancy. We’d like to reiterate this is entirely voluntary and no colleagues are being placed at risk of redundancy.

“As we look to improve the service, we offer our customers it’s important our stores have enough colleagues in the right place at the right time and in an effort to improve this we have opened up this voluntary redundancy programme.”

Last year the retail giant acquired collapsed retailer McColl’s which included 1,160 stores and 270 Morrisons Daily format stores. At present, there are almost 500 Morrisons stores across the UK, but the retailer has plans to expand further.

Last year, Morrisons wholesale director said:

“Across Great Britain, 35% of the population are now within a 10-minute drive from a Morrisons Daily, which we think is good progress since starting off in 2017,

“Ultimately our ambition is to have store numbers in the thousands, not the hundreds, in the future and by adding more high-quality retailers we will build those numbers.”
