A senior heart surgeon at an NHS hospital has been charged with 14 counts of sexual assault against six female members of staff over a five-year period.

Amal Bose, 54, formerly worked at Blackpool Victoria Hospital as the head of cardiovascular surgery but was arrested in August after reports of sexual offences against employees.

The hospital contacted Lancashire police in 2023 after hearing the reports from female staff members.

    A Lancashire Police spokesman said:

“On March 14, last year, we were contacted by the hospital who reported to us a number of allegations of sexual assault on employees at the Trust.

“Following an investigation and after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service we have now charged a man.”

Bose, of Thurnham, near Lancaster, has been bailed to attend Lancaster magistrates’ court on June 7.

A Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesman said:

“The Trust can confirm that a former member of staff has been charged with offences of sexual assault.

“The Trust has been working with Lancashire Constabulary and co-operating fully with their investigation.

“I want to reassure patients and their families that the hospital remains a safe and caring environment and the provision of services continues as normal.”

Sexual assault at work – what should I do?

If you have been a victim of sexual assault at work, you should notify the local police department and report the situation to your employer, such as your supervisor or human resources (HR) department as soon as possible.

You may be entitled to claim compensation for the damages experienced. Each case is assessed on an individual basis. For more information on this, contact Oakwood Solicitors Ltd today for a free consultation.
