NHS Trust Admits that it was Responsible for the Death of a Husband’s Wife Who Killed herself in Hospital Room After Suffering Post-natal Depression
The Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust has admitted that they are responsible for the death of 33-year-old Diana Mager who was suffering from post-natal depression and took her own life in a hospital room.
Her widower Adam said that Diana ‘would be alive today if she had received proper care’ following a climbdown by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.
Initially officials said that Diana’s death ‘could not have been predicted or prevented even though she had made a number of suicide attempts.”
The family have pursed a claim against the trust they have now back pedalled and admitted that the tragedy could have been avoided.
Mrs Mager committed suicide in August last year while she was being treated at Green Parks House psychiatric unit in Orpington Kent and died by forcing paper towels down her own throat.
Mrs Mager suffered severe post-natal depression after giving birth to Sofia in November 2011 she was also self-harming and battling anorexia.
Diana have previously been allowed to leave the unit for short periods during one of those times she went to the Tate Modern and tried to jump from the roof.
On a separate occasion she smuggled a knife into her room which was an which her husband said was proof that she should be constantly supervised.
Around the time of her death she was subject to checks by nurses every 15 minutes – even though her medical records showed that she was ‘at very high risk of killing herself’.
Earlier this year the Oxleas Trust said that there was nothing they could do to prevent Mrs Mager’s death.
Once Mr Mager launched a legal challenge they said that they could have prevented her killing herself.
