Ovarian Torsion: Client awarded £15,000 after delay in medical diagnosis

A client has been awarded £15,000 in compensation after her consultant failed to diagnose ovarian torsion, resulting in the removal of her ovary.

The consultant initially thought she could be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

The client, who wishes to remain anonymous, had a medical history that included menorrhagia, intermittent abdominal pain, blood clots, frequent vaginal bleeding, and two ovarian cysts on her right ovary. In April 2022, she visited the emergency department with severe lower abdominal pain.

A CT scan revealed suspected ovarian torsion, but over the course of three days in the hospital, the consultants were uncertain whether her symptoms were due to ovarian torsion or IBS.

Just before she was set to be discharged, a doctor confirmed the ovarian torsion diagnosis. She underwent surgery, where it was discovered that her right ovary had become necrotic and had to be removed.

As a result, the client endured significant pain and underwent an oophorectomy. Oakwood Solicitors successfully secured £15,000 in compensation for her pain and suffering, which was caused by the medical negligence.

Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary, and sometimes the fallopian tube, twists and cuts off the blood supply. The hospital’s failure to recognise this condition for three days led to the client’s prolonged suffering.
