The Edenfield Centre is a mental health hospital in which highly vulnerable patients reside.

However, following whistle-blowing allegations of poor staff behaviour and patient safety in the Hospital a BBC undercover reporter spent three months as a healthcare support worker to investigate further.

    abuse at Edenfield Centre

A recent Panorama programme that aired on Wednesday, 28 September 2022 explores the ‘toxic culture’ of the hospital by the use of secret footage that was captured.

The video footage shows staff mocking, slapping and having patients being inappropriately restrained. There are also reports of a patient being detained in isolation rooms that are to be used when there is an immediate necessity, being used as a form of seclusion for some patients for more than a year at a time.

The Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust which runs Edenfield Hospital is taking the allegations “very seriously” and have taken “immediate actions to protect patient safety”.

The Trust is now working with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Greater Manchester Police. Some staff have been suspended and investigations are ongoing.

These allegations and findings are concerning. Mental health hospitals, just like any hospital are to safeguard vulnerable patients. Suffering abuse and mistreatment at the hands of such medical professionals could give rise to a claim for compensation, as this would amount to a breach of their duty of care.

If you or a loved one have suffered abuse at the hand of a hospital, medical centre or mental health hospital, you may be entitled to seek compensation for the pain and suffering you have endured. If you feel you have been affected, please feel free to contact us.
