    Periodontal disease – Medical Negligence

    What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is another term for gum disease. Gum disease is where gums become swollen and infected; this occurs when there is a build-up of plaque (bacteria) on the teeth.

It is more common in males and diabetics.

The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis (gum inflammation) and if this is not treated, you may suffer from periodontitis (gum disease). If this is not treated, your teeth may fall out.

The most common sign of gum disease is your gums bleeding when you brush your teeth.

What treatment is provided for periodontal disease?

In mild cases of periodontal disease, the condition can be treated by brushing your teeth twice every day, flossing daily and using antiseptic mouthwashes.

To ensure the condition does not come back, regular check-up appointments at the dentist are crucial. However, in instances where the condition has progressed, a dentist may need to assist in treatment.

    The main dental treatments are:

    1. Scale and polish – a dentist would professionally clean your teeth to remove the build-up of plaque
    2. Root planning – a dentist would clean under your gums to remove the plaque at the roots of your teeth
    3. Periodontal surgery – a dentist would remove the affected tooth

periodontal diseaseWhat are the consequences of periodontal disease not being diagnosed or treated correctly?

If periodontal disease is not diagnosed or treated correctly, you may develop:

    • Receding gums
    • Loose teeth
    • Teeth falling out – this may lead to you needing dentures, which can cause eating issues
    • Development of pus on the teeth
    • Damage to the bone that holds your teeth
    • Irreversible gum damage

If you are pregnant and the condition is not diagnosed or you are not treated correctly, you are at risk of having a premature birth.

Furthermore you may also be at a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, strokes and lung infections.

Overall, the delay in diagnosis or correct treatment can cause problems when treatment is eventually carried out.

Therefore, it is crucial a dentist recognises the development of periodontal disease as soon as possible or they may be deemed negligent.
