Plastics Firm Fined After Employee Severs Fingers in Saw
A Birmingham plastics firm have been in court and fined after a worker severed four fingers in a circular saw.
At the time of the incident the employee was working at Kalsi Plastics (UK) Ltd on Tomey Road Tyseley on 10 August.
He tried to clear a blockage by stopping the machine when the saw blade moved automatically from its operating position to its maintenance position in the base of the machine. Due to the saw position in the base of the machine the worker was unaware that it was still rotating. When he tried to clear the blockage his left hand came into contact with the blades and severed four of his fingers. He has not been able to go back to work.
Kalsi Plastics UK was prosecuted at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today (6 Jan) following the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation. HSE discovered that the motor was not fitted with an injection brake because of this the saw continued to rotate for almost five minutes after the stop button was pushed.
Kalsi Plastics (UK) Ltd of Tomey Road Tyseley was fined £6000 and ordered to pay £2418 costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
