It was recently revealed prostate cancer is now the third biggest cancer killer in the UK. On average, one in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. Likewise, it is now more common than breast cancer. In 2015 there were 11,819 deaths from prostate cancer whilst 11,442 died from breast cancer. The gap is only expected to grow.
In the early stages, most men do not show the symptoms of prostate cancer. However, the key signs to look out for are:
- Difficulties urinating
- Experiencing a weak flow when you urinate
- Dribbling urine after you finish urinating
- An increase in need to urinate, especially at night
- A sudden urge to urinate
- Blood in the urine
The symptoms in the latter stages include:
- Back pain
- Weight loss
- A loss of appetite
- Pain in the testicles
- Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
Unfortunately, prostate cancer appears to be a taboo subject. Overall men feel less comfortable discussing their health concerns than women. It is vital people share their stories to encourage awareness of this growing killer. The more people speak, the more likely the issue of prostate cancer will be tackled and hopefully death rates will begin to decline like in the case of breast cancer.
